What Do You Consider As ‘improvement Of The Breed’ When You Are Considering Breeding Your Dogs?

As breeders what traits are you hoping to change in your chosen breed? In your mind does this mean breeding against a trait or towards a trait? How is this trait interpreted in the standard (working or conformation)?
I figured that I would throw a thought provoking question out on a Saturday afternoon. Hey after all this beats answering, ‘What should I name my new puppy?’ or ‘How do I housetrain my dog because I have tried everything’, questions.

    Personally, in my breed, I want to see more dogs that do it all. This breeding for the field, and creating dogs that don’t resemble what the standard states is just as wrong as the people who breed show dogs that wouldn’t know a bird if it hit them in the face.
    For the show dogs: I want to see a dog that will stand a bird with intensity. Not “I was trained to stand here, so I will, and look bored doing it” A dog that is at least capable of going on a weekend hunting trip. without falling over and dying because their breeders have perverted the standard, and created a dog incapable of running in the field, ie those giant clunky things.
    For the field, I want to see correct feet, correct legs. Correct toplines. Not Pointer(english) toplines. Correct GSP toplines. Correct heads. Frankly, most of the field trial dogs I see are awfully fugly, and would be laughed out of the show ring.
    Basically, I want what the standard says the dog should be. The appearance, the birdyness, the ability to hunt, retrieve, ect. Not whatever a lot of people are breeding now…
    Like, for example, I have a b*tch I could breed Teddy to right now. They would be amazingly beautiful. They would suit each other nicely, I’d be line breeding back to a dog that very recently was inducted into the Hall of Fame, not to mention the other HoF dogs behind Teddy, from his father’s side. Great bloodlines.
    But, I won’t. I like Teddy, he has great conformation, he’s really birdy, he runs well. I adore Teddy.
    But, Roz…Well, she’s pretty, that’s for sure. She finished as a puppy in a few months with all majors. But she doesn’t know what a bird is, so I won’t breed that. (And she’s crazy-really really crazy. XD

    Breeding for better “instinct” (herding, hunting, retrieving, ratting etc.)
    Breeding for better genetic health.
    Breeding for better conformation to the standard.
    Add: Temperament! I knew I was forgetting something!
    I’m not a breeder, but that is what I would expect any breeder I am purchasing from to strive for that.

    Temperment, the instinct for what the dog was made for, E.G Labordor with a better hunting, tracking, and swimmer.

    Good question! But I am not a breeder so starring for my contacts! I am driving my daughter to the train right now, when I get back I will research and answer if it is still open!

    I am not a breeder, but I think that it probably just depends on the trait. If border collies are neurotic because they are obsessive herders, you may want to breed it out of them But border collies are also seen as intelligent, so you may try breeding intelligence into them as well.
    Good question, I wish all the dog section questions were like these :)

    I don’t want to “change”my breed!
    I want to get as close as possible to the BREED STANDARD! Otherwise,I’d need to find a *different* breed,wouldn’t I?
    There are always “fads & fashions” that come & go-I don’t bother falling into that. Foremost is breed TYPE. Is there absolutely no doubt what that specimen is from across the room? Soundness next. All parts there in correct proportion? Is the dog capable of doing the job it was designed for? Do I need to check plumbing to determine gender?????
    Last on my list…..please,don’t be a black&tan-lol

    I am not a breeder. But I would like if breeders, breed to improve the dog’s natural and physical abilities. Also to help their health & to prevent the nasty diseases most dogs are unfortunately suffering. I think they should also have the understanding that the dog must be bred for a good purpose and not for money! The shouldn’t be used for any purpose involving money, just love…

    I am not a breeder, but very involved with rescue and breeders of rotties.
    I would say in the last 20 yrs good breeders have done a lot to erradicate HD in our stock, and most definitely have developed a milder temperament in the breed.
    There was a point that UK dogs were being bred very small but they have come up again a little to more the top end. In the 80′s they were so big that they were not really fit for purpose. My biggest boy back then was 65 kgs of pure muscle. Nowadays 50 kgs would be considered top weight for a show boy.
    One of the things UK breeders are now having to try and consider, and there has been debate on this, is the tailset as obviously these have only been seen since the ban. It meant for some breeders that the topline had been developed so straight that the tail went up and over in a Q, and it was felt that the croup had lost its slant to carry the tail in the correct position. lol…. something else for them to work on.
    It has been interesting watching the development though.
    We now have several people here in the UK who are determined to bring German working stock more and more into the lines here, including one breeder who openly says that he wants to see ONLY German working lines in the UK, however a lot of us feel that working dogs are not always suitable in pet homes as the drive is different, and we could end up with more problems when the breed is popular as a “pet”.

    I am not a dog breeder & have never bred a dog in my life. But I believe that if ones meets the standards of the breed & carries all the positive traits, temperament, structure, genetics…..da da da da. & finds a quality mate to counter any negative issues, you will come up with some quality pups.
    I think that most reputable breeders already do this & the BYBers should be wiped off this planet.

    If i was too ever breed dogs (to which i know i never will) i would follow breed standards and educate the public as best as possible, i would breed for these 3 things in order
    1) Sound/calm temperament would be my most important since i am a big Bull breed fan.
    2) Health to make sure my litters and also breeding dogs were of sound and clear health so new owners would be 100% sure they would have purchased a pup with a clean bill of heath.
    3) Appearance none of this awful, ripped and ugly over the top mutant muscle bull breed (to which i don’t see the desire people that breed them like this shouldn’t have dogs) but for the original tall, lean build they are supposed to have
    They would also go to good home’s which would be checked out by me personally along with a background check and a life long helpling and return policy if there lifestyle changes from anything small or large i would be there!
    But thats my two cents
