Umbilical Hernia In Dogs?

Our new puppy (7 1/2 weeks) has an umbilical hernia….I was hoping to get some feedback from dog owners who have had dogs that have these hernias? When I lay him on his back, the contents go back into his tummy and the skin tightens up, but when he gets back up the pressure puffs it out again. He’s not in pain at all when we touch it, and from some of the research I’ve done it seems as though it’s common for it to be taken care of when we get him neutered. We just brought him home and I’m taking him to the vet in the next couple days for his check up, but i was hoping to hear from other dog owners.

    Umbilical hernias do not ussually cause any problems, and it can be fixed when he gets neutered… pretty much just like you learned.

    your correct the most common thing with umbilical hernias is that there picked up on by the owner and vet when the puppy has his first vaccine and, unless its urgent and the vet thinks the puppies big enough for the op soon, they will schedule it to be done at the same time as hes neutered so the little one only has to have one operation.Its a common problem and the vets deal with it frequently so will be able to fix it.
    one of the puppies ive breed had a small umbilical hernia which the vet fixed at the same time as neutering.its doing great 3 years on so there not something to worry about as long as the vet checks it out and fixes it before they get to old and :)
