My 10 Week Old Puppy Will Not Leave Me Alone!?

I have a 10 week old Yorkshire Terrier puppy. We have had him for 4 days and he won’t leave me alone. I am home all day so I am available to housetrain him. If I leave the room to do some house work, he whines and barks for me, even if he can see me! I’ve tried firmly saying “NO!”, I’ve tried ignoring him and praising him when he stops, but nothing is helping and he is really getting on my nerves! I just want some time to myself and not have to worry about tripping over my puppy! Is this a form of separation anxiety? What should I do??!!

    This will pass, but you have to be firm. Just curious, are you crate training? Some people don’t like to crate train but any good vet will tell you that once they get used to it, they actually prefer it because it’s their den, with a sense of comfort and routine. That could help with the separation anxiety. And yes, dogs do get separation anxiety, your exactly right, some more than others. I have a husky that used to suffer from it severely. If the dog starts barking or whining, give one firm no, tap the top of the cage, and then ignore him. This will take some patience but you’ll just have to tune it out, should last 3-4 nights max. Keep in mind though that if the dog is quiet and then barks an hour or two later, he may need to go out because young puppies have a hard time controlling their bladder, especially in small dogs, but then right back to the crate if it’s nighttime. Yorkies have a tendency to become overly dependent on their humans, so it’s best to nip this at a young age. Good luck!

    yeah they tend to have separation anxiety, my mom bought a yorkie maltese when i was about 7 or 8 and she and my dad went to vegas and left me and and my 2 older sisters with her puppy and every night she would sit by the door and cry until she came home, and even now im 15 she still stares out the window when we come home waiting and has to sit on her lap while shes driving.

    He just wants attention. He’ll eventually grow out of it, but you should give him all the attention he wants now. Who knows, he might not always be this anxious to see you and to play with you.

    take him with you on leash so you cant supervise him. train quiet when he barks.

    you are lucky enough to have a cute puppy love you so much. What if you were to have a baby? Would you get irritated if the baby was crying for you? If you are worried about tripping over him get a puppy fence for the inside of your house and keep him in there ONLY when you are cleaning. The rest of the time, spend time with him. Remember he is a baby and just because he’s not human doesn’t mean he doesn’t have feelings. He has adopted you as his mommy and he’s simply wanting attention from his mommy as a human baby would. As he gets older he will stop. Also , it’s only been 4 days, he needs to get used to his new surroundings and his new life.

    He should always be crated when you can’t supervise him.
    I always wonder why people get puppies, and then get upset because they are so needy. Perhaps a puppy isn’t for you. Rehome the puppy, and try to get an adult dog.

    If you didn’t want that, your should NOT have gotten a Yorkie. Yorkies are very attached to their owners. They don’t like being alone! I have two, and they follow me EVERYWHERE!!! And when I leave the house, *I* have seperation anxiety because I want them with me! You should not have gotten that poor little thing!! He deserves an owner that wants to be with him. You took on the responsibility to take a cute little puppy into your house… now take care of him, or let him go to someone who actually WANTS him. They don’t like being locked up, they don’t like being left alone. You definatly got the wrong breed! They are amazing dogs! But they want you to want them! They want you as their best friends! If you can’t provide that poor puppy with the love he deserves, let him go somewhere where he will get it!
