I Have Just Become An Owner Of A Boxer Mix Puppy – What Should I Feed Him?

He is 5 months old – should he still have puppy food? What brand is good? Should he have canned food or dry? I have only owned cats and a friend couldn’t care for this dog and I have ended up with it. He is great – very well trained already and I would like to provide a good home for him.

    He should eat puppy food until he’s a year old. Try the puppy formulas made by Innova, Blue Buffalo, Acana, Merrick/Before Grain, Taste of the Wild, Wellness, Solid Gold, Timberland Organics, Instinct, Pinnacle, Fromm Family… You need to look for foods with several meats (especially in the first top spots on the ingredients list), no corn, little filler, and preferably no animal fats (which are often preserved with BHA, which contains carcinogens). For more information, go to http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com The quality of ingredients doesn’t really change in brands between cat and dog formulas, so you can trust those brands for your cat food, too (I feed my cats Innova, and they go crazy for it!). Your dog only needs to eat dry kibble.
    Keep in mind that for this dog, since he’s a Boxer mix he’ll most likely be extremely active and intelligent, so plan on a ton of walks and training. If he hasn’t gone through his puppy courses yet, enroll him. These are important for both socialization, and training/obedience.     Most Puppy foods recommend using it for a year. This is a bit self serving though. The puppy food won’t hurt him, other than possible weight gain from the extra protein and nutrients. So I’d say a year is the cutoff.
    And Mom, why did you keep breast feeding me until I was 14? Dad was so jealous.

    I think that you should do what you think is best for him. If he eats that puppy food fast, give him more. When my dog was 6 months old when my family started giving her NorthWest Naturals raw food so I would consider waiting another month before giving her raw food.
