Care Of A 6 Week Old Labrador Puppy?

Hi,
I just got (06/16) a 6 week old female yellow lab puppy, and yes I know that 6 weeks is too early to be leaving it’s mother, but the couple that had the (they were not breeders) puppies are moving next weekend and they would have been taken to a shelter where they would have most likely been euthanized in a couple of days (the shelters where I am are crowded).
Anyway we brought her home and gave her a good-quality puppy food that had been softened with lukewarm water, she gobbled it up along with plenty of fresh water. She has been consistently using her “wee-wee” pads for pooping and peeing, it takes her anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes for her to go to the bathroom. She sleeps well, plays vigorously, and sleeps like a log but I have just one worry, her poop is a little runny, she is not dehydrated (skin-pinch test) and she drinks a lot of water, some people have said it might be caused by the excitement and uncertainty of coming to a new place. I just need suggestions, please don’t answer with rants and raves about how irresponsible is is to have such a young puppy, I am looking for intelligent suggestions and responses. I would be grateful for other suggestions for methods of caring for her.

    Keep an eye on her. If she shows any other signs of illness take her to the vet. If she starts vomiting or looks lethargic in addition to the diarrhea, she needs to go to the vet ASAP. Otherwise take her to the vet next week to make sure she has all the shots she needs and that she’s generally in good shape.

    It may simply be the diet. A lot of dogs get a little bit of dirrehea when they change diets (or homes) Are you feeding her the same as her previous owners? If not that may be all it is. Or, as you said she could be a little stressed in the new environment – make sure you give her LOTS of attention. If it’s still happening, in say a week I would go to a vet.

    Diarrhea can be caused by a change in water, food, environment, or by disease, parasites, stress, toxic reaction, and medical disorder. If you just obtained the puppy, then it has a new environment, food, water, as well as stress (good or bad), and maybe a parasite or two. I’d be surprised if the poop wasn’t runny. You should have her vet-checked within a couple days. At that time have a fecal check run for parasites and set up a vaccination schedule. She should not be vaccinated until the diarrhea is cleared up. A possibly ill dog should never be vaccinated. Keep her inside and away from any area that loose dogs may have touched until she has started her vaccinations.
